our power went off last night
it is strange to sit on the porch
in total darkness
if it is really hot
my neighbors slowly
will come out too

it is a very comforting thing
to sit in the dark
and talk
to catch up
with those who
spend their lives around you
yet
not with you at all

when the morning comes
we put our faces back on
and wave to each other
as we go about our daily lives

just for a moment
the veil falls

perhaps that is the pleasure i find in a good heavy snowfall. everyone is placed on the same level, all struggling together against mother nature. neighbors and strangers will talk and help one another battle the storm. but soon enough the magic is over. and we pass each other in silence once more.
